Grenzüberschreitende Zusammenarbeit spielt eine große Rolle in dieser nordrhein-westfälischen Städteregion und der gesamten Euregio Maas-Rhein, der sie angehört. Die Nähe zu Belgien und den Niederlanden ist hier allgegenwärtig. Mit ihren mehr als einer halben Million Einwohnern umfassen die zehn Städte und Gemeinden des ehemaligen Kreises Aachen so unterschiedliche Orte wie das idyllisch gelegene Monschau, Tor zum Nationalpark Eifel, und das geschichtsträchtige Aachen mit seiner berühmten technischen Hochschule. Der hier verliehene Internationale Karlspreis würdigt besondere Verdienste um die Einheit Europas.

Von der EU unterstützte Projekte und Initiativen - Beispiele

DynaGET

To facilitate the energy transition, the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) supported research by RWTH Aachen University to improve the quality of wind turbine components. The EU contributed around EUR 356 000 or half of the estimated costs of the project DynaGET.

SME Internationalisation through Digitalisation in the EMR

Digitalisation and internationalisation often go hand in hand. The plans of the Aachen Chamber of Craft Trades to support small and medium-sized enterprises in the region in their transition to digital marketing were funded by the EU with around EUR 760 000. 

Art Heart 2.0 Marketing

An Aachen-based medical technology company was awarded around EUR 3.2 million in EU funding for a three-year project on artificial hearts. This enabled extensive research in collaboration with RWTH Aachen University on the functionality of the system.

#AachenMooVe!1: Expansion of foot and cycle path network

Creating incentives for walking and cycling – that is the aim of the city of Aachen, which wants to increase the safety of non-motorised road users by widening cycle paths and improving pavements and footpaths. Some EUR 5.3 million in EU funding – approximately 80 % of the eligible amount – was made available for the three-year project.
