Are you, or is someone you know, one of the 57 million recognised members of the scouting movement worldwide? Then you will already know that scouts in Europe and internationally are committed to building a better world where people feel fulfilled as individuals and play a constructive role in society.
Over two million scouts are active in Europe. The EU helps fund some 40 national scout organisations through the European Scout Region, which itself falls under the umbrella of the World Organization of the Scout Movement.
Informal learning and volunteer work both figure large in scouting activities, and these are recognised in the 2019‑2027 EU youth strategy to promote young people's participation in society. Erasmus+, the EU funding programme for youth, makes funding available for scouting, education and exchange, for example under the Erasmus+ opportunities for organisations and European Solidarity Corps initiatives.
As part of the EU's work in non‑EU countries, the new youth action plan in EU external action focuses on young people as change-makers in implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Through the EU Youth Empowerment Fund, World Scouting, together with six other big youth organisations, is partnering with the European Commission to engage, empower and mobilise young people to create youth-led projects contributing to local solutions to the world's biggest challenges.
