As an archaeologist, you may be looking forward to opportunities to work abroad. Fortunately, the EU single market allows you to work anywhere in the EU, provided you have the right qualifications.
The EU also supports archaeologists through policies, programmes and funding. Most EU funding for archaeology comes from the Creative Europe and Horizon Europe programmes and the European Regional Development Fund, which support professionals in both traditional and emerging subfields. Projects supported by the EU aim to improve the management of archaeological sites, link researchers, facilitate access to data (including digital data), explore new ways to teach archaeology to young professionals, and encourage professional mobility within and beyond the EU. ARIADNE and Archeomedsites are two good examples. The EU's Erasmus+ programme also offers training possibilities for archaeologists on topics like digital excavation.
The EU co-funds the Europa Nostra awards for heritage conservation. In the Heritage Quest project, a 2022 winner, volunteers helped archaeologists inspect maps of a remote area, discovering thousands of previously unknown archaeological features, including prehistoric burial mounds. The resulting data will also be used in a machine learning project, so that artificial intelligence can be used to identify features in the future. The eu‑citizen.science website helps citizen science projects like Heritage Quest find participants.
