Half of all adults in Europe are overweight or obese. Does that include you or someone you know? While there are many causes, the EU is determined to help you reduce the health problems linked to poor nutrition, overweight and obesity. Building on measures already being taken by EU governments, the European Commission established a strategy for Europe on nutrition, overweight and obesity-related health issues in 2007. In June 2022, the Commission presented the Healthier Together initiative, which includes several actions on obesity prevention.
Perhaps you have a child who is at risk of becoming overweight or obese? Childhood obesity affects one in three children in Europe, and is a particularly alarming issue as it can lead to lifelong health problems. The EU-funded iFamily study showed that children from disadvantaged families are more likely to be overweight. In 2024, an update is expected to the 20142020 action plan on childhood obesity, currently being evaluated. In addition, several projects are tackling the issue. The COCREATE project aims to reduce the prevalence of obesity among adolescents in Europe by promoting healthier food and physical activity. The BioStreams project combines research, prevention measures and community participation in a holistic approach to reducing obesity rates among children and adolescents.
The EU also runs a milk, fruit and vegetable programme for schools and other initiatives that will help people to make healthier food choices thanks to simplified nutrition information provided on the front of food packaging.
