Do you want to learn another language? With over 200 languages in Europe and 24 official EU languages, being able to speak more than one language gives you a definite advantage in Europe. It can help you find a job, grow your business, or simply connect with other people and make friends.
The EU appreciates the value of linguistic diversity and supports people learning languages, from pre-schoolers to retirees. The EU works with national governments to encourage language learning through information campaigns, funding projects and research. All this is done with an ambitious goal to boost language learning, helping any EU citizen who wishes to be able to communicate in at least two languages other than their mother tongue.
People moving between countries and thereby improving their language skills can look to the Erasmus+ programme for support, such as online linguistic help. The Eurydice network helps educators exchange information about foreign language learning in schools in Europe. In some countries, EU cohesion funds are spent on language courses or the development of modern technologies that facilitate language learning. If you learn another language, you can check your linguistic competences using the common European framework of reference (CEFR) for language skills and be sure that your level (e.g. A1, B1) will be recognised in other countries.
Each year on 26 September, Europe celebrates the European Day of Languages. You can take part in numerous events and connect with other people discovering European cultural diversity through language.
