From the Caribbean to Patagonia, Latin America is popular with European tourists: in 2019, Europeans chose this destination for more than 5.3 million trips.
The EU and Latin America have a deep-rooted, shared history and culture. Several EU development programmes create opportunities for safe travel, work and study for EU citizens in Latin America, including university exchange programmes such as Erasmus+.
Climate change increasingly affects the diverse Latin American landscape. The EUROCLIMA+ programme helps Latin American countries tackle climate change and poverty reduction. Through AL-INVEST Verde, a European programme promoting sustainable growth in Latin America, the EU supports Latin American countries to comply with the new EU deforestation law.
The EU also has strong bilateral partnerships with individual countries. By working closely with Colombia to support the peace process, the EU helps build a safe, resilient society. The EU also funds EL PAcCTO, an international cooperation programme that seeks to contribute to security and justice in Latin America by supporting the fight against organised crime. The EU's COPOLAD programme helps countries establish strong drug policies and create a safe environment for locals and EU citizens alike.
Thanks to EU rules on consular protection, EU travellers can ask for assistance from any EU country's embassy or consulate when abroad. The EU's visa reciprocity agreements mean you can travel visa-free to countries such as Brazil, Costa Rica, Mexico and many more. An EU Emergency Travel Document will be available for all EU citizens in 2025.
