Do you enjoy travelling? Whether you prefer a city trip in Europe or trekking on the other side of the globe, flying to your destination has become much more affordable and accessible.
The creation of the internal market for aviation in the EU has profoundly changed the way we fly. By replacing national rules with European ones, aviation liberalisation has increased competition among airlines. This has brought new services and players, low-cost airlines, new connections, lower fares and wider access to air transport. The EU has also reinforced EU‑wide rules on safety and security.
Although it is now easier and cheaper to travel by plane, the increase in traffic has also led to airspace congestion, delays, crowded airports and longer waiting times. The EU has put measures in place to protect passengers. When you buy a ticket for a flight departing from an EU airport, you have a right to information on the terms and conditions and the final ticket price. EU law protects you if you fly within the EU, if your flight to the EU from a non‑EU country is operated by an EU airline, and if you are flying from the EU to a non‑EU country. If you are denied boarding, your flight is cancelled or delayed, you may be entitled to assistance, under certain conditions: re-routing or reimbursement in the two first cases, and compensation depending on the length of your flight and extent of the delay. If you have a disability or reduced mobility, EU laws should ensure you have a smooth journey. If your luggage is lost, delayed or damaged when you arrive, you may also receive compensation.
