Remember when you used to think twice before using your mobile phone in another EU country? When you were constantly uneasy about the enormous bill that might be waiting for you when you got home? Fortunately, the EU has put an end to companies' high roaming charges for calling, texting or using internet services such as email on mobile phones while travelling in the EU.
Thanks to EU legislation, we can 'roam like at home' throughout the EU. In June 2017, after a long and difficult process, the EU finally made it possible to use your phone the same way in another EU country as in your home country. And since July 2022, new and improved roaming rules extend 'roam like at home' until 2032, with the same internet speed as at home.
The advantages for phone users are manifold: you can now call someone in another EU country, telework or use your mobile phone to navigate while abroad, all without extra roaming charges. Thanks to EU action, you stay connected: you can send texts, make video calls, download maps of the local area, use satellite navigation, find museums or bars, watch a movie on the go, or share your photos on social media platforms. The new roaming rules also ensure we are all aware of the universal EU emergency number 112, which you can use to reach emergency services anywhere in the EU.
