As a producer of this iconic drink, you know that whiskies originate in Europe, but are appreciated all over the world. Producers in Ireland and France are establishing a rapidly growing presence in the market worldwide. In Ireland alone, the whiskey industry employs more than 1 600 people, with global sales increasing by 150 % since 2010.
To ensure your quality product has a prominent place on the global market, EU laws can protect whiskies as a geographical indication (GI), provided they meet certain standards. The Irish whiskey GI covers whiskey produced throughout the entire island. With over 40 operational distilleries, the value of Irish whiskey industry exports increased 25 % from 2019 to 2022. Ireland also has ambitious plans to become home to the world's most sustainable distilleries with regard to its environmental and social footprint.
Meanwhile, if you are producing in France, the EU's largest importer of whiskies, you are part of the country's own fast-growing whisky industry. The 86 operational distilleries benefit from your expertise in distilling and the availability of used wine barrels for ageing the spirit. You are probably aware that France has two GIs: Whisky d'Alsace and Whisky de Bretagne.
Exports of whiskies are an important economic factor for those who live in producing regions. To protect GIs better internationally, and thus promote sales of authentic European products, the EU insists on this issue in trade negotiations with non-EU countries. Through its efforts, the EU effectively reduces your trade tariff costs and safeguards local production.
