Host to two universities and a population of 140 000, Dundee is Scotland's fourth biggest city. Although there has been significant growth in the number of small businesses over the past five years, the start-up survival rate is below average compared with the rest of Scotland and, at 4.9 %, the city's unemployment rate is higher than the UK average of 4.1 %. EU funding in Dundee has been channelled mainly into addressing some of the social issues arising from high unemployment, boosting economic growth and enhancing the city's environmental credentials.
