The rugged landscape of the region is intersected by the Váh River basin and by strategic road and rail links between Bratislava and Žilina, and with the neighbouring Czech Republic to the West. The region has long had a low unemployment rate. More than half of the population works in industry, in particular in the engineering, electrical and mining sectors, but also in the textile and leather sectors. Agricultural land occupies two-fifths of the area. The only city with more than 50 000 inhabitants is Trenčín, the cultural and industrial hub of the region. Tourism is based on numerous historical monuments and thermal springs.
