The Julian Alps, the River Soča and the area’s rich geological and cultural heritage are the standout features of the Goriška region. Its favourable geostrategic location along an international border means the region is able to attract entrepreneurs and capital from neighbouring areas. The region is affected by population decline, particularly owing to emigration from among the most productive section of the population. Fruit- and wine-growing are highly developed in the Vipava valley, but the region’s geographical, hydrological and climatic features mean it is prone to natural disasters.
