Novo mesto is the regional and urban centre of south-eastern Slovenia. Home to a number of companies that are important exporters in Slovenia’s economy, the city has a high level of economic development. Novo mesto has played an important role in history and its archaeological heritage is of global significance. It has been called the ‘city of situlae’ – as many as nine figurative decorative situlae have been found here, almost a quarter of all the situlae found anywhere in the world. The city is surrounded by the hills on which cviček wine (a typical product of the region) is produced and the Gorjanci range. On a small island in the Krka river stands the picturesque Otočec castle.
