Maribor is the second biggest city in Slovenia, the economic and cultural centre of the country’s north-east and its football capital. The city can also boast of having been the 2012 European Capital of Culture and the 2013 European Youth Capital. Lying beneath the Pohorje mountain range, with picturesque vineyards extending right down to its centre, Maribor also plays host to a number of important festivals, such as the Lent multicultural festival and an international puppet festival.
Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU
Renovation of Skate Park
Maribor’s area existing skate park has been renovated. Now extending over an area of 9 937 square metres, it is the biggest skate park in Slovenia. The renovation of the skate park has created a multifunctional facility which both improves the opportunities for young people to participate in sport and makes it safer for them to do so.
Renovation of the Carinthia road with Main square
The aim of this project is to ensure sustainable mobility in the city centre so as to make it more attractive and improve air quality. The restoration of Koroška cesta, once the city’s first promenade, will enliven the city centre and give a boost to its shops and restaurants.
Footbridge Lent-Tabor
A new bridge for pedestrians and cyclists crossing between Lent and Tabor will connect parts of the city centre along the river Drava and revitalise the two riverbanks. It will promote redevelopment of degraded urban land, reduce social degradation and provide a shorter route into the city centre.
Modernization of cable cars and construction of outdoor center Maribor - Areh
The modernisation of cableway installations and the construction of the Maribor-Areh outdoor centre will help in developing the provision of activities on the Pohorje mountain range year-round. The project will include upgrading the cableway infrastructure and the building of new bike tracks.
