Murska Sobota is a young, energetic town with a rich history whose location on the Mura river, in the heart of the Prekmurje plain, has long made it an attractive place for settlement. The smallest urban municipality in Slovenia, Murska Sobota is the administrative, economic, cultural, educational and healthcare centre of the Pomurska region. It is located not far from the borders with Hungary, Austria and Croatia. The name Murska Sobota comes from its location on the Mura river and the fact that it was the site of a weekly Saturday market (sobota in Slovene means ‘Saturday’). The country’s only Protestant-majority town, Murska Sobota is the seat of the Bishop of the Evangelical Church in Slovenia. In the nearby village of Pušča is the largest Roma settlement in Slovenia, considered to be a model for dealing with Roma issues in Slovenia.
