Luleå, the capital of Norrbotten County, lies at the mouth of the Lule River in the Bay of Bothnia. Luleå’s economy is principally based on the metal and services industries. The city has a large port – which is a centre for iron ore and steel exports – alongside an airport and good road and rail connections. Luleå University of Technology is the most northerly establishment of its kind in Sweden. It is the only university in the country to offer civil engineering courses focusing on space technology.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

Digital platform for elderly

‘DioD Digital och Delaktig’ is a project designed to create a digital platform where older people can communicate with others, as well as access entertainment and information. An important aspect of the project is to understand users’ needs in order to create personalised services. This entails a step-by-step development process in which users are involved throughout.

Research project on snow and ice

Luleå University of Technology is spearheading the Snow Academy, a project which aims to develop and apply research into snow and ice for the benefit of Norrbotten’s business community. It includes research and testing activities in the areas of automotive technology, road maintenance, ski technology, energy and tourism. In the long term, it is hoped that these will help increase the scale of research-related activity and foster the development of more innovative products.

Expansion of railway infrastructure at Tuvåkra

 The Tuvåkra/Gammelstad combined transport terminal project aims to develop railway facilities in the Tuvåkra industrial estate in Luleå Old Town. An extended combined terminal with more railway tracks and more loading capacity will make the site an important hub in northern Sweden’s transport network. The increase in volume the project will bring about is positive from an environmental point of view. It will also make companies more competitive.

Expansion of the harbour in Luleå

The Port of Luleå is to going to be adapted to accommodate larger vessels. At the moment, vessels cannot come into port fully loaded or be fully loaded at berth because the port and the adjacent waterways are too shallow. Malmporten is a project that involves the construction of a new deep port with new land areas for the storage and handling of inbound and outbound cargo. The aim is to make shipping more effective and reduce its environmental impact.
