Timiș is situated in Western Romania, in the historical region of Banat, bordering with Hungary and Serbia. Timișoara, the capital city of the county, is the main social, economic and cultural centre in Western Romania. Timiș County has benefited from its proximity to the Western border and from its historical ties with Europe, which translated into high levels of foreign investments (third place in the country, after Bucharest and Ilfov), particularly in the automotive industry, electronics and telecommunications. In 2023, Timișoara is one of the European Capitals of Culture.
