The South-Muntenia development region comprises seven counties: Argeș, Călărași, Dâmbovița, Giurgiu, Ialomița, Prahova and Teleorman, with a total population of 3.2 million and a density of 96.3 inhabitants/km². The region is bordered to the south by the Danube and to the north by the Făgăraș and Bucegi mountains, and boasts extensive farmland and a range of natural resources. South-Muntenia ranks third, after Bucharest-Ilfov and Nord-Vest in terms of regional GDP (11.76 % of national GDP). The counties of Argeș, Dâmbovița and Prahova are the region’s industrial base, while Călărași, Giurgiu, Ialomița and Teleorman have a mainly farming and agri-food tradition (the EU has granted Topoloveni plum ‘magiun’ protected geographical indication status). The region has a rich history and culture.
