Sălaj County is located in the north-west of Romania, between the Eastern Carpathians and the Apuseni Mountains. In the past, it was traversed by the old salt and trading routes, which provided a major link between central Transylvania and western Europe. The county seat is the municipality of Zalău, where the manufacturing industry dominates. The county's heritage includes 68 wooden churches, monasteries, mansions and castles from different eras, as well as the Roman camp at Porolissum, which is an archaeological site unique in Romania, and a 15-are wildlife conservation area, along with local crafts and traditions.
