Situated in the northwest of the country on the border with Ukraine, Maramureș is known as the ‘land of wooden churches’. The county’s capital is the municipality of Baia-Mare. The timber industry and the manufacture of electrical appliances make up two-thirds of its economic activity. Its heritage includes nine Natura 2000 sites of community importance, eight wooden churches forming part of the UNESCO World Heritage, the colourful cemetery (‘cimitirul vesel’) of Săpânța and a great wealth of traditions and customs.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

Project Phase Integrated Waste Management System in Maramureș County

This is in addition to RON 97.4 million for the completion of a waste management project commenced in the 2007-2013 funding period.

Regional project for the development of water and wastewater infrastructure in Maramureș county

A total of RON 682.7 million has to date been allocated by the EU for the improvement of water and sewerage infrastructure in the county, with investments targeting two municipalities and 27 localities with over 103 700 inhabitants in total.

The circuit of wooden churches in Northern Transylvania

In the field of cultural tourism, the EU has allocated RON 13.1 million to the Northern Transylvania wooden churches project for the restoration of 16 wooden churches, seven of them belonging to the UNESCO World Heritage, which was completed in 2016.

Rehabilitation and promotion of the cultural and historic identity Cetății Square - Ștefan Tower, Baia Mare

In the city of Baia Mare, EU funding of RON 5.6 million has been earmarked for the renovation of Piața Cetății and St Stephen Tower. 

Rehabilitation of Castle “Teleki”

The restoration of the Teleki Castle in Colțău also benefited from 5.8 million RON.

Conservation, refurbishment and enhancement of the Cultural Palace in Sighetu Marmației with the destination of “Saint Iosif the Confessor Pastoral Cultural Center”

The Cultural Palace in Sighetu Marmatiei was also rehabilitated with 17.5 million RON from European funds.

Capitalising on the cultural heritage through the restoration and rehabilitation of the “Colony of Painters” in Baia Mare Municipality

EU funding of RON 14.4 million has been earmarked for the restoration of the ‘Artists Colony’, a contemporary art centre epitomising the city.

Restoration, consolidation and enhancement of the Wooden Church “Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel” and of the annex utilities, Sat Plopiș, no. 109, com. Șișești, jud. Maramureș.

Another 4.8 million RON from EU funds contributed to the restoration of the wooden church in Plopiș.

Rehabilitation of the County Road Baia Sprie (DN 18) - Cavnic (DJ 184) - Ocna Șugatag (DJ 109F) - Călinești (DJ185) - Bârsana (DJ185)

EU funding of RON 67.5.million has been earmarked for works on the Baia Sprie-Cavnic County Road. 

Rehabilitation of the North Road – Maramures, Stage I

A further RON 192 million for improvements to a 72-km section of the Maramureș northern highway, providing 50 bus stops, 79 pedestrian crossings and over 15 km of pavements. In addition, 10 bridges have been renovated and two new bridges have been built.

Extension and rehabilitation of water and wastewater infrastructure in Maramureș county - second phase

EU funding has been earmarked for the rehabilitation and expansion of the water and wastewater infrastructure in the county, including RON 91.7 million for the completion in February 2018 of the second phase of a project initiated in 2007-2013.
