Ponta Delgada, a city in the Autonomous Region of the Azores in the Atlantic ocean, is located on the western side of the island of São Miguel and was granted city status in 1546 during the reign of John III. In 2021, Ponta Delgada had a population of 67 233, making it the most populated city of the Azores. Boasting an international air- and seaport, Ponta Delgada is considered the most important gateway and point of departure for passengers and goods in the Azores. The Ponta Delgada municipality is home to the Monumento Natural Regional do Pico das Camarinhas, the Ponta da Ferraria, as well as the Paisagem Protegida das Sete Cidades, with the latter site being one of the first areas to be granted protected status by the Autonomous Region of the Azores. The University of the Azores, which was founded in 1976, is also located in the city.

INT-UAc – Internationalisation of Research of the University of the Azores
The University of the Azores (UA) is a partner in the project [FORWARD](https://forward-h2020.eu/stakeholder/uac/, which aims to support and develop research and innovation in the outermost regions of the EU. As a result of this project, the AU is a beneficiary of EUR 77 272 in EU funds, for the INT-UAc project, which aims to get AU researchers involved in international projects, organisations, commissions and thematic networks.
Modernisation of the Grace Market
With its story dating back to 1848 and central location, Graça Market is an essential presence in the lives of the city’s residents The renovation of the market includes changes to the structure – roofs, facades – and organisational and operational changes – new equipment and commercial furniture. The ERDF contributed 85 %, amounting to EUR 721 000.
Ponta Delgada - Smart City
Ponta Delgada has been taking steps towards becoming a smart city. To that end, the project Ponta Delgada – Smart City, co-financed at a rate of 85% by the ERDF, amounting to EUR 270 155, and aims to set up an Integrated Operational Centre to monitor the municipality’s activities and install interactive kiosks in the city.
Requalification of the Port of Ponta Delgada
The upgrading of the Port of Ponta Delgada is one of the projects with the largest budget in the autonomous region, totalling EUR 52 million, of which it is receiving 85 % from the Cohesion Fund. The project’s beneficiary is the entity Portos dos Açores, S.A. and its aims are to improve operating conditions, extend the port’s functional areas and improve safety conditions.
