The municipality of Cascais is home to some of the most characteristic towns around Lisbon. Cascais, Carcavelos and Estoril have rich histories and remain important centres today. Cascais was the first Portuguese town to have electric street lighting. Carcavelos has its own demarcated wine region and, more recently, has become a surfing destination. Finally, Estoril has its famous casino, beaches and turbulent World War II past, when many people went there to seek refuge or passage to America. All of this comes in a spectacular setting that brings together sea, mountains and countryside.
