The geography of the region of Viseu Dão Lafões is marked by the Viseu plateau, numerous mountains and by the rivers and streams that criss-cross it. The region’s towns and cities have a history stretching back thousands of years. Viseu has always been an important town, having been the capital of the kingdom and the seat of the bishopric. The Dão, the wine region named after the river that runs through it, has seen a series of investments in its vineyards, some over 100 years old. This is a region of contrasts, stretching from its built-up coastline to the historical towns of its hinterland.
Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU
Refurbishment of Casa das Bocas
The project to convert Bocas House, a dilapidated former manor house in Viseu, into a health centre had two goals: providing a long-term healthcare facility and renovating a building in the historic centre of the city. EU funds covered 85 % of the project.
Refurbishment of the thermal baths of São Pedro do Sul
The recent restoration of the 2000-year-old thermal baths of São Pedro do Sul was part of a wider project to preserve the historic Roman spa building, classified as a national monument and part of Portugal’s cultural heritage. EU funds provided 85 % of the budget for the renovation. A previous refurbishment of the D. Afonso Henriques baths modernised its equipment and techniques for treating rheumatic diseases and respiratory ailments.
The Rotten Fruit Box
LIOFOOD has developed ‘The Rotten Fruit Box’ project, which freeze dries surpluses from small-scale fruit producers to make healthy snacks. The company received 45 % co-funding for its launch on the national market, totalling roughly EUR 400 000.
Dão eco-path
The Dão greenway is a path built on the bed of the former Dão railway line, with a length of more than 48 km. Work on the greenway began in 2007, and it links three municipalities: Viseu, Tondela and Santa Comba Dão. The project cost around EUR 5 million, of which the EU provided 85 %.
