Aveiro was granted city status by King Dom José I in 1759. Its history is bound up with salt: the earliest references to the mineral date back to 959. Synonymous with the city of Aveiro are ovos moles (literally, ‘soft eggs’), a traditional delicacy made of egg yolks that trace their origins to nuns in the 16th century. Between 2011 and 2021, the city’s population grew around 3.1%, climbing to almost 81 000 residents. One factor behind this growth is the University of Aveiro, founded in 1973. The city’s connection to the natural world is widely known: one need only think of its lagoon or the São Jacinto Dunes Nature Reserve. The city’s efforts to preserve its architectural heritage have earned it international recognition as Portugal’s open-air art nouveau museum.
