With its beautiful coastline and Mediterranean climate, the Algarve depends mainly on the services sector and tourism. On average, it receives 5 million tourists every year, most of them in the summer. In several municipalities, the number of visitors exceeds the number of residents. The Algarve is well known for its fishing traditions, such as tuna fishing, and its oranges, figs and medronhos (strawberry tree fruits), among other products.
