Vila Real has been inhabited since Palaeolithic times, was founded by the charter of D. Dinis in 1289, and gained city status in 1925. Lying on the Corgo river, Vila Real has always had a favourable location between Porto and Bragança, Viseu and Chaves and the Alvão and Marão mountain ranges. Nowadays, the escarpments of the Corgo river form the backdrop to the Passadiços do Corgo, a passageway that connects the old town to other parts of the city. The region of Baixo Corgo is one of the sub-regions of the Douro.
Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU
Acquisition of Linear Accelerator and Technological Update of CHTMAD Radioncology Service
The ERDF contributed EUR 4 169 823 towards one of the biggest investments in Vila Real: a linear particle accelerator and more up-to-date technology for the radiotherapy department. This will improve access to higher quality cancer treatment for patients in the Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro regions.
Renewal of TUVR bus fleet by purchasing ‘clean’ MIDI buses
The Vila Real public transport company (TUVR) showed its commitment to the environment and energy efficiency by purchasing two MIDI electric buses to replace two diesel vehicles. The project received EUR 371 000 in EU funding.
Central BIEL
The hydroelectric power station in Biel was also the first of its kind in Portugal and supplied the grid in Vila Real from 1894 to 1926. A partnership between the municipality, Dourogás and other organisations kick-started an initiative to create a museum for this piece of archaeological and industrial heritage. Around EUR 1.2 million in funding, 85 % of the total, was provided by the ERDF.
SmartAgeing
The University of Trás-os-Montes (UTAD), founded in 1986, is located on an eco-campus and offers courses in life and earth sciences. An innovative hub in the local area, the university works with local businesses on projects such as the SmartAgeing project, which aims to improve quality control methods for white port wine and simultaneously extract important data about the ageing process.
Citizen's shop in Vila Real
In 1999, citizens’ bureaus were created as a ‘one-stop-shop’ for people to engage with public authorities. They enable citizens to manage all administrative procedures relating to identity documents, social security services and national and local matters in one place. The citizens' bureau in the historical centre of Vila Real was redesigned with the support of EUR 350 000 in ERDF funding.
