The Alto Minho intermunicipal community is known in Portugal and abroad for its traditional food and its ‘vinho verde’ (young wine). Served by transport infrastructure including Port of Vigo and Porto Airport, the number of overnight stays has grown considerably since 2013. Alto Minho is renowned for its coastal, river and mountain landscapes. It is also a gateway between Portugal and Spain, with a number of motorway links, including the northern coastal motorway.
Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU
EGov Alto Minho 2020
The initiative aims to modernise public services in the Alto Minho region for both citizens and businesses, and also to improve access to IT tools. The purpose of the platform, which received 85 % of its funding from the EU, is to help promote the region and improve public services, including waste collection, public transport and utilities.
Requalification of the Streets of the Historical Center of Arcozelo
The project aims to boost social mobility in the historical centre, with the EU providing 85 % of the funding. An urban regeneration project carried out in the city centre has improved access to shops and traditional restaurants for both residents and tourists.
Affordable student housing
As part of the Recovery and Resilience Plan, a project worth EUR 13.1 million has been approved to make 15 000 more beds available and to refurbish existing accommodation.
The Wolf and the Man: Protecting, valuing and raising awareness
The municipality of Paredes de Coura invested in the Man and Wolf project in order to challenge traditional views on the historical conflict between humans and the Iberian wolf, and also to raise awareness about the advantages of conservation efforts for both communities and habitats. The project received EUR 134 336 from the ERDF.
Remodeling of the Medical-Surgical Emergency Service of Viana do Castelo Hospital
The project to redesign the A&E department, which serves over 250 000 people, helped restructure and improve the hospital by significantly cutting waiting times. Around 85 % of the project’s funding was provided by the EU.
Qualification and Valuation of the Portuguese Way to Santiago de Compostela
Ten municipalities in the Norte Litoral region, including the municipality of Viana, which led the project, invested in works to renovate the St James’s Way route along the Portuguese coast, which goes from Porto to Valença. As part of the project, signage was standardised, footpaths and facilities were renovated and cultural heritage sites were restored, along with other improvements.
Building of the Cultural Centre
The cultural centre, which was designed by architect Souto Moura and opened in 2013, was one of the biggest investments in the city and now hosts sporting and cultural events. The project received EUR 11 million in funding from the ERDF.
