Aruba is one of the four countries that make up the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Due to its geographical location and its free zone, Aruba is also important for trade from and to North and South America, the Caribbean and Europe. Aruba therefore lives from tourism and trade, but it is also working to diversify its economy.
Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU
University of Aruba
The University of Aruba and other organisations in Aruba are involved in Erasmus+, the EU student exchange programme, for which they have collectively received EUR 1.8 million; and with EU support (EUR 13 million) the university is developing a new technology and sustainability faculty.
Digital Transition
In 2023 and 2024, there has been EUR 14.2 million in EU support for Aruba’s digital transition by introducing digital technologies into government workflows, ensuring accessible digital public services and developing new businesses.
EU citizenship
In the EU, Aruba is one of the overseas territories with associated status. As a result, it is eligible for certain EU funds and partnerships. The relationship with the EU also means that Arubans are European citizens (as well as holding Dutch nationality). This allows them to move and reside freely within the EU.
