North Limburg is an important logistical hub for the Netherlands and Europe due to its favourable location at the crossroads of European motorways, railways and waterways. In addition, the region has a strong agricultural sector and high-tech manufacturing industry. The region is popular with tourists owing to its recreational parks and nature reserves.
Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU
Dynamic Borders on the Rhine and Meuse
The EU provides resources for cooperation between North Limburg and neighbouring German and Flemish regions. The project Dynamic Borders aan Rijn en Maas supports various initiatives such as cross-border cycling and hiking routes and internships for German and Dutch young people in the agriculture and food sectors.
Wifi4EU
The WiFi4EU voucher provides a lump sum of EUR 15 000 per municipality. Municipalities receiving vouchers select the ‘centres of public life’ where the WiFi4EU hotspots (wireless access points) are to be installed. In North Limburg, this was requested by the municipalities of Horst on the Maas and Venray.
North Limburg nature reserves
The EU also helps to protect nature reserves in the region, such as the Groote Peel and de Maasduinen. Other examples include the Zeldersche Driessen in Gennep and De Boschhuizerbergen in Venray
