Rotterdam, the second city of the Netherlands, is particularly famous for its seaport, which is one of the largest in the world, ensuring a high level of activity in the logistics and industrial sectors and a flourishing services sector in the centre thanks to its ease of access. Thanks to attractions such as Euromast tower and the cube houses, the city is also popular with tourists.
Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU
New hospital building in Rotterdam
The Franciscus Gasthuis en Vlietland hospital received financial support from the European Investment Bank for the construction of a new modern hospital building. It also provides for on-site child care for the children of hospital staff.
Sustainable investments in urban roofs
How can we ensure that buildings can also contribute to Europe’s climate goals? In Rotterdam, the LIFE programme shows how your rooftop can also play a role in the fight against climate change. The rooftops of Peperklip, Hill and Robert Fruin Streets were equipped with the latest technologies so they can be used to retain rainwater, generate energy or keep cool.
Smart and green ports
The daily operation of the port (unfortunately) also requires a huge amount of energy. With European support, the Port of Rotterdam, together with other key ports in Germany, France and Portugal, is working on a project to make EU ports more climate-friendly. It’s goal is to ensure that transport within, to and from ports is CO2 free by 2050.
Airport technology lab
Rotterdam Airport opened, with European support, a research laboratory for the latest airport technologies. This includes how to predict the weather around the airport more accurately, how to expedite terminal and baggage operations, or even the development of low-noise and sustainable aircraft.
