The Riga region is economically the most important region in Latvia, and also has the largest population. Riga has a population of some 642 000. The biggest economic sectors in terms of the number of businesses are these: services, trade, construction and industry. Riga was the European Capital of Culture in 2014. A European Union agency has its headquarters in Riga: the Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications (BEREC).
