Vilnius is the rapidly changing capital of Lithuania and the most modern city in the country, famous for its picturesque nature and impressive architecture. The city is one of Europe’s greenest capitals, and its citizens enjoy good air quality. Vilnius Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the largest old town in Eastern Europe. Vilnius is also an important centre of the economy, politics, science, culture, transport and industry. There are well-developed high-tech and construction sectors, food, biochemical and wood processing industries, intersections of major highways of European significance, and an international airport.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

Modernisation of Vilnius city street lighting system

The aim of the project is to increase the quality and energy efficiency of street lighting public services in the city of Vilnius.  Adequate and modern lighting infrastructure will ensure safety on the streets and reduce the costs of electricity, repair and maintenance, and lighting service.

Installation of municipal waste container sites in Vilnius city

A project is currently underway in Vilnius to develop the municipal waste infrastructure by installing 85 underground, 1 050 semi-underground and 115 above-ground container sites. The project, which targets around 480 000 inhabitants of Vilnius City Municipality, will contribute to the development of a unified municipal waste infrastructure.

Establishment of a multifunctional health centre for Lazdynai

An EU-funded project will construct and fit out the new, modern multi-functional Lazdynai Wellness Centre in Lazdynai district of Vilnius City, which will be adapted to visitors with different needs – from mothers with small children, athletes, school-age and retired people, to persons with disabilities. The project will help to create opportunities for quality and active leisure and improve access to professional and amateur water sports in the city.

odernisation of Vilnius Mickiewicz Public Library buildings

The infrastructure of the Vilnius County Adomas Mickevičius Public Library was upgraded in order to improve the quality, accessibility and diversity of library services, in order to maintain existing and encourage additional visitor flows. The project included the creation and modernisation of new spaces, as well as the acquisition of conference equipment and furniture for the organisation of events in line with modern needs.

Increasing energy efficiency of the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre

With 100% funding from EU Structural Funds, the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre building was modernised between 2019 and 2022 with the aim of increasing energy efficiency. The project helped to ensure reduced financial costs, improved working conditions for staff, greater longevity for the building, and increased accessibility and quality of cultural services.

Modernisation of schools in Vilnius: Creating modern learning spaces

With the support of European Union funds, Vilnius City Schools – Vilnius Ąžuolynas Progymnasium, Vilnius Žemyna Progymnasium, Vilnius Žemyna Gymnasium, Vilnius Alexander Pushkin Middle School, and other educational establishments – have been renovated to improve the learning environment.

Reconstruction of Vilnius city waste water treatment plant

Projekto tikslas - pagerinti Vilniaus miesto ir Vilniaus rajono gyventojams, įmonėms, įstaigoms ir svečiams teikiamų nuotekų tvarkymo paslaugų kokybę, užtikrinant, kad išleidžiamose nuotekose vidutinė metinė teršalų koncentracija atitiktų geriamojo vandens tiekimo ir nuotekų tvarkymo reikalavimus.
