The City of Rome, Italy’s capital, was for many centuries the capital of the western world. Modern-day Rome is the most heavily populated city in Italy, one of the biggest European capitals in terms of land area and, above all, the city with the greatest abundance of cultural and architectural heritage in the world. Rome is also one of the 14 metropolitan cities receiving EU funding under the 2014-2020 multi-fund national operational programme (PON METRO) Under this programme, the city has some EUR 40 million to spend.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

Smart Mice Platform

Almost EUR 700 000 have been allocated to the creation of an integrated digital platform – known as the ‘Smart MICE Platform’ – to manage and promote the provision of venues and services linked to conference tourism.

ROMÆ FORM

EUR 1.4 million has been allocated by the EU to FORMA ROMÆ, a project to make it easier for the public and researchers to access archive materials and historic cartography documents stored in the ‘Archivi di Sovrintendenza’ and associated institutions.

Rome Urban Core Network Node

The Rome Urban Core Network Node project, funded by the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) programme, identified optimal measures to increase the capacity of the Rome bypass.

City.Risks

Under the European City.Risks project, which focuses on testing innovative technological solutions for security, an IT system was developed which seeks to prevent crime as well as to reduce its impact and that of other threats to the security of the citizens of Rome.

SMARTICIPATE

The EU research project SMARTICIPATE promoted the use of digital technologies, making open data easier for citizens to use in order to foster their participation in the implementation process of local services.
