The City of Rome, Italy’s capital, was for many centuries the capital of the western world. Modern-day Rome is the most heavily populated city in Italy, one of the biggest European capitals in terms of land area and, above all, the city with the greatest abundance of cultural and architectural heritage in the world. Rome is also one of the 14 metropolitan cities receiving EU funding under the 2014-2020 multi-fund national operational programme (PON METRO) Under this programme, the city has some EUR 40 million to spend.
