With around 1.5 million inhabitants spread over approximately 9 400 km², the Marche region stretches from the hills to the Adriatic coast of central Italy. Its per capita GDP is slightly lower than the European average, but it is defined as one of the EU’s ‘transition regions’. Marche offers a wealth of history and culture, with fascinating medieval cities such as Urbino and Loreto, each with their own unique history reflected in palaces, churches and monuments. It is also a region full of amazing natural beauty, such as the picturesque Conero Riviera. Marche plays a significant role in the national economy, thanks to its strong manufacturing base and key sectors such as agriculture and tourism. The region is also renowned for its delicious food – from artisanal cheeses to premium charcuterie, such as Ciauscolo, hand-made pasta and fine wines, such as Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi.
