Due to its geographical location at the crossroads between the north and south of the Italian peninsula, Bologna is a major logistical hub for road and rail transport. Home to an ancient university, the regional capital is an important cultural centre. The Fiera district is the driving force behind the city’s expanding tourism sector. The economy of the province and the metropolitan area boasts a strong, well-integrated and export-oriented industrial base. The most active sectors are agrifood, automotive engineering, metalworking, chemicals, printing and publishing, and pharmaceuticals.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

SACHER Project

The aim of the SACHER project, which received an EU contribution of EUR 440 000, is to advance the region’s cultural heritage by setting up a cloud computing platform to manage the entire lifecycle of data on cultural assets, consolidating the various separate databases run by the different public/private cultural operators in one place.

COVID-19 Emergency Plan

To address the health emergency caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the EU provided more than EUR 16 million – equivalent to 50% of the total budget made available to Bologna’s health system – for the purchase of goods and services intended to boost the health service’s ability to tackle COVID-19.

CLEAN PORT Project

Thanks to EUR 360 000 in EU funding, the University of Bologna conducted an industrial research project named ‘Clean Port’ to switch the fuel systems of vessels operating in the port of Ravenna over to liquefied natural gas to make the port more energetically sustainable and, therefore, less polluted.

Teaching rooms in the Urban Farm Bologna

On the urban farm in the Pilastro district, a contribution of EUR 300 000 in EU funds enabled classrooms and spaces to be set up to host educational activities and workshops on the topics of the environment, food and sustainable farming, as well as other intercultural activities aimed at promoting solidarity and social inclusion in a deprived area.

Purchase of LNG city buses for local public transport

The EU contributed EUR 3.5 million between 2018 and 2020 for the purchase of 51 new methane buses in the metropolitan area of Bologna, seeking to make public transport more attractive and promote a shift towards sustainable mobility.
