Trieste, the regional capital of Friuli Venezia Giulia, prospered under the Austro-Hungarian Empire and gave it its main sea access. Its population and economy grew and it became a cosmopolitan and multi-ethnic city. It became part of the Kingdom of Italy at the end of the First World War, before being the backdrop, towards the end of the Second World War, to many painful pages in Italy’s history. The issue of Trieste was resolved in 1954 with the London Memorandum. Its economy revolves around the port and its satellite industries, shipbuilding, petrochemicals, mechanics, textiles and pharmaceuticals, but also banking and insurance. More recently, Trieste has developed into an advanced and competitive research pole.
