The only city of its kind in the world, Venice is, in reality, made up of a number of urban centres and has a total surface area of 414 km2. Venice’s topography is both complex and varied, as it comprises a great many bodies of water (which account for more than 60 % of the city’s total surface area), the old town (made up of 120 islands which are linked by 400 bridges and are home to 52 000 residents), the islands on the Venetian Lagoon and the built-up and industrial areas on the mainland in Mestre and Marghera, which are home to more than 200 000 people. The unique characteristics of Venice’s urban areas throw up a series of complex issues and challenges, which are compounded by the city’s status as a major transport hub and as one of the world’s leading tourist destinations.
