Sardinia, with its history going back thousands of years and popular image of sandy coves nestled between the rocks, is a Mecca for the tourists that are a driving force behind its economy. Once a mining region, its industry is now concentrated in a number of specific locations, while traditional sheep breeding is still the main form of agriculture. With a per capita GDP equal to around 70 % of the EU average, Sardinia remains one of the Union’s least developed regions.
