Catania is the seventh largest metropolitan area in Italy, an important commercial and industrial centre and the second most populous city in Sicily. Catania’s historic city centre, like those of other towns in the Noto Valley, is famous for its late baroque architecture. Mount Etna is not only a distinctive landmark, but also a major destructive force.
Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU
A ceramic museum in Caltagirone
A further EUR 8.5 million has been allocated for the fitting-out of the regional ceramics museum and a theatre space in the former Convent of San Agostino in Caltagirone.
Recovery of a building with 96 apartments
Under EU financing programmes for metropolitan cities, Catania has received EUR 91 million for projects in the fields of sustainable mobility, energy efficiency and social inclusion, such as the project to renovate 96 dwellings in a building in Librino that had fallen into a state of severe disrepair.
The largest European photovoltaic panel factory
Having received more than EUR 117 million from the EU Innovation Fund, a factory in Catania is now in a position to become the biggest factory in Europe producing highly innovative new-generation solar – or photovoltaic – panels. One of the world’s largest renewable energy players is carrying out the project.
From tobacco factory to museum
Through the national culture and development programme, EU funding has been granted for measures to protect artistic, architectural and cultural heritage. EUR 5 million (75% of the total cost) has been made available for a project to preserve the old tobacco factory in Catania and convert it into a museum.
A research project linked to Etna
The EU also provides financial support for scientific research into Etna, such as the VulcaMed project on the monitoring of natural risks, safety and environmental control, which the Etnean Observatory in Catania took part in.
