Founded by Greek settlers in 493 BC, Messina was originally known as Zankle. Today, it has around 221 000 inhabitants. The city’s per-capita income of approximately EUR 19 000 is below the Italian average, while its unemployment rate (21.5 %) is among the highest in the country. The services sector is the mainstay of the Messina’s economy owing to the presence of the port. Messina is one of the 14 Italian metropolitan cities receiving EU funding under the 2021-2027 multi-fund national operational programme (PN Metro Plus) amounting, in its case, to around EUR 225 million.
