The province of Trapani is located in western Sicily and includes a number of islands, such as Pantelleria and Favignana, along with Italy’s largest fishing port, in Mazzaro del Vallo. Salt-pan farming, fishing, and the production of wines (such as Marsala PDO and Erice PDO, protected trade marks under EU law) are traditional activities in Trapani which are now complemented by the steady growth of tourism. The city of Trapani is the capital of the free municipal consortium of Trapani, which in 2015 succeeded the abolished regional province and includes 25 municipalities, of which Marsala has the biggest population.
