Basilicata (also known as Lucania) is one of the smallest and lesser-known of Italy’s regions. Its landscape is varied: mountains and hills abounding with forests and streams, a panoramic coastline, agricultural plains and arid areas. At 75% of the EU average, Basilicata’s pro capita GDP is low. For the purposes of the 2021-2027 programming period, it has therefore been ranked among the areas in the EU where development is lagging. The percentage of agricultural workers in the region’s economy is one of the highest in Italy, while the car industry dominates its exports. The choice of Matera as a 2019 European Capital of Culture boosted tourism and encouraged new businesses to open.
