In pre-Roman times, Bari, capital of Apulia, was known as Barium and lay in the territory of the Peucetians. Today, it is the most populous city in the region, with an interesting variety of architectural styles. As well as having a well-developed agricultural sector, it is also known for its mechanical engineering, chemical and textile industries. The port of Bari shows a positive trend in cargo volumes and is among the top ports of call in Italy for cruises. Tourism is also growing, especially along the coast. The metropolitan city received over EUR 80 million, jointly funded by the EU under its 2014-2020 programme, to improve services for its residents.
