The province of Brindisi is predominantly rural, with a population of around 400 000. The regional capital rises 13 metres above sea level, and is home to a major trading port, developed around a natural harbour. It is one of the Adriatic’s safest ports and has significant commercial traffic. The agricultural sector is extremely important, employing around one-third of the local population; for example, the area is famous for its olive growing. The tourism industry is rapidly expanding and is seeing an increasing development of beach resorts.
