Most of the municipalities in Avellino province lie within the region of Irpinia. Avellino is the wealthiest province in Campania, with a per-capita GDP of approximately EUR 15 285. A quarter of its businesses are engaged in either commerce or agriculture. Agri-food is the leading export sector, followed by engineering and fashion, a field in which Avellino’s traditional tanning and leather working sector is active.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

Environmental restoration of surface water in the inner areas

The EU is financing, with EUR 19.5 million, 75% of work to improve water services in Avellino province by reducing leaks from the water supply network and restoring the ecology of lakes and rivers in the province.

Development Agreement - Confalone Paper Mill

Thanks to development contracts from the Ministry of Economic Development, Cartiera Confalone will receive over EUR 46 million (EUR 24 million from the EU) to build a new paper mill, storage for semi-finished products and a fully automated warehouse.

An experience in Ireland: internship in tannery

EU funds have been made available for schools that want to prepare young people for their future working lives by arranging work experience for them during their studies. A technical college in Solofra, for example, has launched many projects of this kind, including tannery placements abroad and improvements to leather workshop facilities.

Redevelopment and enhancement of the 'Victor Hugo House' cultural promotion centre

Work began in February 2022 on restoring and upgrading “Victor Hugo’s House”. This historic building will become a culture and tourism centre available for cultural events, training courses, research activities and conferences. The EU will fund 75% of the project’s cost, namely EUR 1 250 000.

Development Agreement -Altergon Italia S.R.L.

 The ‘Altergon Italia’ development contract, total cost almost EUR 17 million, will boost the pharmaceutical sector through investment in the construction or enlargement of five production facilities and the development of new innovative medical devices. The EU has invested close to EUR 9 million.
