Known as ‘Roma Secunda’ during the Roman Empire, then later renamed ‘Mediolanum’, Milan has been northern Italy’s main city since the birth of the Kingdom of Italy. With 1.3 million residents, Milan is currently Italy’s second most populous city. Thanks to its advanced industrial development, it is also Italy’s economic capital. Furthermore, it is considered one of the world’s fashion and design capitals. The City of Milan receives European funds under the operational programme PON Metro, which is aimed at urban regeneration and the social, economic and environmental reinvigoration of the metropolitan fabric.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

Services for social inclusion

The Municipality of Milan has developed programmes to improve social inclusion services. Thanks to European funds (around EUR 1.6 million), the City of Milan has invested in projects to, for example, rehabilitate public facilities and provide low threshold services for the inclusion of homeless people in extreme housing situations.

Financing the Cassa integrazione in deroga (cigd)

Through the European Social Fund, the EU put EUR 84 million towards the exceptional wage guarantee fund (CIGD). The CIGD is a tool that acts as a social shock absorber in the event of major economic crises, such as the one provoked by the pandemic, and provides additional financial support to workers and companies to avoid layoffs.

Investments to strengthen the crisis response capacities of health services

The EU allocated more than EUR 40 million to the enhancement and upgrading of public health facilities. The investment was aimed at strengthening the health system’s capacity to tackle the COVID-19 crisis by promoting development, research and technological innovation.

Zero Digital Divide Project

With its contribution of almost EUR 2 million from the European Regional Development Fund, the EU has financed 40 % of major projects to install broadband in areas where the digital gap is widest.

Purchase of 117 buses with hybrid-powered buses

The European Union fully covered the purchase of 117 hybrid buses, to the tune of EUR 32.4 million. The Municipality of Milan is trying out electric and hybrid vehicles on a large scale with a view to replacing diesel vehicles in the long term and making public transport more sustainable.
