The largest of Liguria’s four provinces, Genoa is also the most populous and most densely populated. In 2015, the province became a metropolitan area following a reform that extended its powers but left the territorial make-up (with its 67 municipalities) unchanged. As a metropolitan city, Genoa is now responsible for strategic, urban and infrastructure planning, and for public services such as roadworks and the move to a digital, paperless society. The Metropolitan City of Genoa has received around EUR 40 million from PON Metro, an initiative co-financed by EU funds to boost Genoa’s role as a hub, given that around 70% of the population in the metropolitan area is concentrated in the city.
