With some 215 000 inhabitants, Asti is the sixth largest of the eight provinces of Piedmont and the fifth in terms of population. Its territory is mainly hilly (97%) and only 3% of the land is flat. Its economy is mostly agriculture-based. The wine sector is particularly important, not least because of its impact on the export market.
