Kildare, Ireland

Kildare is one of the hubs for the Irish tech revolution that has occurred over the past 30 years. The county is home to the famous Curragh and is a centre for the Irish horse racing and breeding industry. It had one of the highest county population growths in the 2022 census and much of the county is within the Dublin commuter belt. With over 15,000 students, National University of Ireland Maynooth (NUIM) is Ireland's fastest growing university.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

RED WoLF: Rethink Electricity Distribution Without Load Following

GLAS Energy Technology in Naas ws part of the RED WoLF project, which started in January 2019. As a partner in the project aimed at reducing housing CO2 emissions, they were given €74,500 from the 2014 – 2020 INTERREG VB North West Europe Programme.

Straw Pelleting Facility

Kildare LCDC runs the LEADER rural development programme in Kildare. From 2014-2020, one beneficiary was Straw Chip in Ballycullane, a family run arm that developed pellet products from the waste residue of straw. A grant of €105,000 in 2018 helped Straw Chip expand processing capacity to develop pellet used in biomass heating appliances in domestic, commercial and industrial sectors. 

Data Stories: Producing stories about and with property and planning data

Researchers at NUIM has received grants from the European Research Council. A project called DATASTORIES received a start-up grant of €2.4 million in 2022, and will research the lifecycles, circulation, politics, power and use in policy of planning and property data.

DART+

The DART+ will result in the extension of the DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transit) into Kildare. Studies for this project were given €2.2 million in 2019 under the Connecting Europe Facility.

2023-2027 LEADER Programme

Under the Transitional LEADER Programme, Kildare was allocated €1.16 million, with a further €5.4 million to follow in the 2023-2027 LEADER Programme.

Social Housing Programme

The European Investment Bank invested €120 million into social housing in Dublin, Louth, Wicklow and Kildare. Under a public-private partnership, 74 units were delivered in Craddockstown, Naas.
