Tipperary, Ireland

Ireland’s largest inland county, Tipperary is part of the Golden Vale and has some of the best agricultural land in the country. With good links to Dublin, Limerick and Shannon, it has attracted foreign and domestic investment in sectors such as manufacturing, life sciences and pharmaceuticals. Tourism plays an important role and the county is an important centre of horse breeding. The Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) has two campuses in Tipperary, at Thurles and Clonmel.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

Community Training Centres (CTCs)

 Tipperary has 3 Community Training Centres at Clonmel, Nenagh and Thurles, 66% funded by the EU’s European Social Fund and Youth Employment Initiative, They help equal access to lifelong learning to all age groups in formal, non-formal and informal settings, upgrade the knowledge, skills and competences of the workforce, and promote flexible learning pathways and validation of acquired competences.

Sustainable heritage management of waterway regions

The €1.53 million Interreg SWARE project fosters integrated management of natural and cultural heritage in inland waterway regions by creating balance between protection and sustainable exploitation of natural resources and built heritage. It led to the Green & Blue Infrastructure Masterplan Roadmap for Tipperary Waterways for the two primary waterways in Co Tipperary – Lough Derg and River Suir.

Tionscadal SMART-SPACE

Tipperary County Council is piloting smart lighting systems in the towns of Thurles, Drangan and Clonoulty, 60% co-funded under the Interreg North West Europe SMART-SPACE Project.  The system monitors movement and adjusts the lighting accordingly, resulting in energy savings and reduced CO2 emissions.

Tipperary Rural Development Programme

The LEADER Rural Development Programme in Tipperary had a budget of over €10 million for the 2014-2020 period, and additional funding of around €2 million until end 2022. Managed by the North Tipperary Development Company and South Tipperary Development CLG, it aims to improve the quality of life in rural areas and to encourage diversification of the rural economy.
